Opinion : New political situation opens up radical new possibilities

'May you live in exciting times!' is a common Chinese exhortation to the respected ones, as events move on, apparently driven by the very logic of those events themselves.

The Mitchel McLaughlin Column

It has often been stated that the peace process has transformed Irish society. Problems that only a decade ago seemed intractable are now being addressed one by one.

McDonald Maritime Labour Report adopted, GUE/NGL President Statement on Berlin Declaration, Failing the people of Ireland and Europe, Cyprus tears down the wall, De Brún sets out priorities for Peace 3 and Batasuna will do 'everything possible' to take part in elections

Dáil General Election Profile : Felix Gallagher, Dublin West

Fingal County Councillor Felix Gallagher (35) is the Sinn Féin general election candidate for Dublin West. A big Celtic fan who studied Economics at Glasgow University, he talks to Ella O'Dwyer about his upbringing, his 13 years in Dublin that has seen him marry and have three young children, and his work managing a grassroots community development project in Corduff, West Dublin. Probably one of the most redrawn constituencies in the 26 Counties, Dublin West includes Castleknock, most of Mulhuddart and Corduff as well as Carpenterstown, Barberstown, Clonsilla and Ongar. It currently has three TDs: Junior Health Minister Brian Lenihan (Fianna Fáil), Joan Burton (Labour) and Socialist Party TD Joe Higgins. Former TDs include Fianna Fáil's Liam Lawlor.

Dáil General Election Profile : Councillor Gerry Murray, Mayo

Sinn Féin general election candidate for Mayo Councillor GERRY MURRAY is from Charlestown. With almost ten years experience as a public representative on Mayo County Council, Gerry is positioned to give the two party bloc in the county a good run for their money. Here Gerry talks to NOEL CAMPBELL about his political background, local issues and Sinn Féin's campaign in Mayo

OPINION : Electoral boundaries and population growth

Three-seaters tend to work against smaller parties

Electoral boundary revisions are a dangerous business. A heady mix of political shenanigans, legal niceties and constitutional minefields. Most politicians treat boundary reviews in a similar fashion to a Brit in Basra being presented with a bunch of flowers. Seems quite attractive but experience says it could blow up in your face.

Cúlchaint

Bhi raic sa Dáil le déanaí nuair a cuireadh i leith an Rialtais go bhfuil siad ag maolú ar neodracht na hÉireann. Shéan Mac Dubhgaill go bhfuil ár neodracht i mbaol nuair a dfhógair sé go mbeadh an coiste Dála ag plé an memorandum faoin "Arm Catha Nordach agus an Ceannceathrú".

The Matt Treacy Column

Ernest Hemingway defined courage as grace under pressure. He was much preoccupied with the whole issue and wrote about those who he thought epitomised that virtue in war or in the bull ring. I doubt if he ever saw a game of hurling but it would have been interesting to know what he would have made of it.

Abolition anniversary should focus attention on modern forms of slavery

Last Sunday, 25 March, marked the bicentenary of the abolition of the British slave trade. It was a further 26 years before Bill for the 'Total Abolition of Colonial Slavery' was passed in 1833. A look at the struggle that led up to the passage of the 1807 legislation demonstrates that it takes courage and tenacity to fight for ideals in face of powerful economic forces. This lesson should not be lost on us today.

Fifth Column

Letter to the Taoiseach

I am writing to you from Stormont on Monday when Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams reached an agreement. Today deserves the description 'historic' in many ways. Very unusual to see Ian sit beside a man wearing an Easter Lily. Perhaps not a time for jest, but it really would be a significant breakthrough if Ian wore the lily.
