The National Hunger Strike Commemoration in Galbally last Sunday was a massive demonstration that the spirit of freedom of which Bobby Sands spoke is alive and thriving in the Ireland of 2009. The large number of young people participating in the event was notable and it was appropriate as it co-incided with the 100th anniversary of Fianna Éireann, the republican youth movement which was founded a century ago this week. Fianna Éireann for decades organised young Irish people to work for the complete freedom of Ireland. That proud tradition is carried on today by Ógra Shinn Féin and was on display in the activities they organised last weekend. Free article
