Volunteer Danny McCauley remembered in Tyrone

REPUBLICANS from throughout Strabane and Donegal gathered on Friday evening 4th June, to mark the 20th anniversary of the death of Volunteer Danny McCauley, West Tyrone Command, Óglaigh na hÉireann.
Led by the Strabane Memorial Flute Band participants paraded from the bottom of the Graveyard Road to Strabane Cemetery where Councillor Jay McCauley chaired the graveside wreath laying and commemoration proceedings.
Following the laying of family flowers, wreaths were laid on behalf of the Republican Movement, Sinn Féin, Ógra Shinn Féin, Strabane National Graves Association and Strabane Memorial Flute Band.
A Decade of the Rosary was then recited by Maggie McCauley, Danny’s mother.
Raymond McGowan, a lifelong friend and comrade of Danny’s, delivered a moving tribute in his honour and this was followed by a recitation of a tribute poem ‘Anocht is bródúil Cineál Eoghain’ by Colmán Mac an Chrosáin.
Following the presentation of flowers to Danny’s mother and his wife, Helen, the commemoration proceedings closed with the playing of Amhrán na bhFiann by the Strabane Memorial Flute Band.
Speaking at the commemoration Councillor Jay McCauley said the large attendance was testament to the high esteem in which Danny was held within the republican community.
“Danny was an exceptional leader whose commitment and willingness to lead from the front, and by example, was legendary and 20 years on from his death he remains an inspiration to all who knew him as well to a younger generation of republicans.”
