European republicans head to London for royal wedding weekend
From Britain's Republic website
REPUBLICANS from across Europe will meet in London on the day after the royal wedding for the second Convention of the Alliance of European Republican Movements (AERM).
The Convention will be hosted by Republic, the British republican campaign, and attended by republicans from all the large European monarchies: Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Delegates will explore opportunities for sharing expertise and resources, pursuing joint campaigns and offering mutual support, with the aim of a 'monarchy-free Europe'.
The AERM was launched in Stockholm last year, at the time of Crown Princess Victoria's wedding, to create a network of republican movements in all the European countries that continue to have monarchs as their heads of state.
Republic campaign manager Graham Smith said:
British republicans are delighted to host this exciting event. I've no doubt the Convention will serve to strengthen the republican movement across Europe, so one day we will have a monarchy free continent."
Since the AERM was launched in Stockholm last year, when Sweden had its own royal wedding, we've been busy sharing experiences and swapping ideas with our European counterparts. We're confident that over the next decade or so we'll see public opinion move more and more in our direction. With our European friends also campaigning for democratic change our movement will be that much stronger.
