GARDAÍ JOKE ABOUT RAPING WOMEN PROTESTERS | INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE FROM CAMERA IN POLICE CAR
Shell to Sea campaigners expose frightening culture of male gardaí
SINN FÉIN Justice & Equality spokesperson Jonathan O’Brien has produced to the media a memory stick of a video of gardaí heard ‘joking’ about raping two women protesters arrested at the controversial Corrib gas project in County Mayo.
The video was released by the Shell to Sea campaign group after the video camera belonging to the two women was accidentally left recording in the back of a police car. Several officers are reported to have been involved in the exchange, lauging and joking about rape.
A second recording later emerged of alleged comments by a Garda sergeant of a sexual nature to a protester about his wife.
Speaking at the Dáil on April 8th at a protest about the scandal, Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald TD said:
“The trivialisation of rape by anybody is completely unacceptable. That such remarks were allegedly made by members of the police service of this state is deeply concerning.
“This incident will undermine the confidence that victims of sexual crime have in the Garda to treat complaints in a professional and sensitive manner.
“Sinn Féin has been saying for a long time that there is a serious need for an investigation into the conduct of gardaí involved in the security operation in Rossport.”
