Donegal Sinn Féin Councillor to retire

Veteran Sinn Féin Inishowen Councillor Jim Ferry has announced his intention to retire from Buncrana Urban District Council at the end of the year.

Speaking prior to the announcement, Ferry said that it was with regret that he made the decision and that it has been an "honour and a pleasure to represent the people of Inishowen".

"I have been thinking about retiring for some time now and I am confident that I am making the right decision," he said. Sinn Féin will now be seeking a co-option to the Council in place of Ferry's seat.

Sinn Féin Chairperson and Foyle MLA Mitchel McLaughlin, paying tribute to Councillor Ferry, said that he has been an active and valued republican for many years. "While we regret his decision to retire, we understand his reasons for it. At this time I would like to record the thanks of Sinn Féin for the contribution Jim has made in advancing republicanism in Ireland and am sure that his contribution will not cease with his retirement."
