The issue has even produced a united Ireland... ranging from Sinn Féin to Ian Paisley's DUP. Throughout the history of the nuclear power debate, Britain has scoffed at the dangers from Sellafield and has belittled Irish concerns.

Guardian editorial, Monday 26 November

I probably should have given it back. That's all I have done wrong - a moral error. I was expecting about IR£1,500 and they had done the conversion and they had put the word Euro before it instead of pesetas. I am going to have to think about it.

David Hickey, after receiving 300.000 Euros (aprox. £250.000) instead of 300.000 pesetas (aprox. £ 1.500) due to a Bank of Ireland mistake, Irish News, Thursday 22 November

I haven't done anything wrong in Ireland, police-wise.

David Hickey, after deciding to do all he could to keep the money, Irish Examiner, Tuesday 27 November.

Steadily and relentlessly, Sinn Féin has pushed its way towards the forefront of politics in the Republic. Alan Ruddock, on the Sinn Fein Pre-Budget Submission, Sunday Independent, 25 November

Mr Adams, below his best as a debater bur still streets ahead of Mr Quinn, is marking out Sinn Féin as the true radical voice of the left. His party's pre-budget submission marks out the territory. Soberly argued and well constructed the submission hammers home the basic points that will strike resonance with many Labour voters...it is not afraid to talk of a redistribution of wealth, of taxes on speculators, of taking the low paid completely out of the tax net. Reading it, and watching Adams's performance against Quinn, should make any Labour apparatchik nervous. -

I do feel better in myself but nothing else has happended. I was promised a flat, but I don't have one. When I have somewhere to live, then I can get a job. Then I won't even be thinking about drinking because I'll be working and won't have time. People think I have this or that, but I don't. I got promises, but nothing else and now it's become more hassle than anything else.

Despite his Person of the Year award, Tony Paget is still homeless a year after saving a bus driver from drowning in the Liffey, The Sunday Tribune, 25 November
