Máire Drumm remembered

A commemoration to mark the 25th anniversary of the loyalist killing of Sinn Féin vice-President Máire Drumm was held in Milltown Cemetery in Belfast on Sunday 11 November. Drumm was in the city's Mater Hospital on 28 October 1976 when three loyalist gunmen, dressed as doctors, shot her dead.

A couple of hundred people turned up for the ceremony and heard Sinn Féin councillor Chrissie McAuley, who spent time with Máire in Dublin's Mountjoy Prison, describe Drumm as "an inspiration to us all". Drumm was also imprisoned in Armagh Jail. She also recounted how Drumm led hundreds of women through the British Army blockade on the Falls Road to lift the Falls Curfew.

Chrissie McAuley also paid tribute to Máire's husband, Volunteer Jimmy Drumm, who died in July.

The commemoration in Milltown was followed by a celebration of Máire's life in the Felons Club, where the Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams addressed the audience.

Local woman who knew Máire sang songs that she loved and used to sing herself and read poems.

The day's events were organised by the Máire Drumm Commemoration Committee.
