RUC allow Orange stunt on Garvaghy Road

The RUC/PSNI escorted a group of Orangemen through the nationalist Garvaghy Road on Sunday, 4 November.

The incident happened at 2.30pm when about ten members of the Orange Order, including Portadown Deputy District Master David Burrows, were escorted along the Garvaghy Road as they came from Drumcree Church. The group went along Drumcree Road and Ballyoran Hill with several RUC Land Rovers alongside.

None was wearing their Orange regalia.

According to a spokesperson for the Garvaghy residents, the Orangemen had attempted a similar stunt in the past number of weeks and it was "significant that on the same day which was supposed to herald 'a new era for policing' in Portadown, the old Orange Order\RUC alliance once more emerged".

A Garvaghy Road spokesperson said that Dublin government officials are currently seeking an explanation but added that the Residents' Coalition may call for a mobilisation of nationalists to prevent a recurrence.
