Adams meets Canadian PM

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has enjoyed a hugely successful visit to the United States and Canada in recent days. On Monday he traveled to Ottawa, where he met with the Irish Canadian Parliamentary Friendship Group in the morning before moving on to a meeting with Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. Adams said both meetings were construtive, friendly and very useful. The previous day, the Sinn Féin President had been in Toronto, where he attended a Famine Commemorative Mass and spoke at the launch of Friends of Sinn Féin Canada.

Adams had flown out on Wednesday 31 October, accompanied by the new crop of Sinn Féin MPs, Pat Doherty and Michelle Gildernew, for the next night's Friends of Sinn Féin annual dinner in New York City. The proceeds of the sellout and immensely successful event are to go to the families of construction workers killed in the September 11 attack on New York and a construction industry committee has already been set up to administer the funds.

Huge media exposure accompanied the Sinn Féin trip, helped by the perceived positive developments in the Irish peace process. Adams made appearances on three of New Yorks' leading shows, Larry King, Charlie Rose and Hanitty & Combs and he was also the guest of honour at a community event in Yonkers that was packed to the rafters.

While in New York, Adams also had meetings with Governor Pataki and New York Congress members Richie Neal and Peter King.
