Jailed Basque leader congratulates Sinn Féin on election success

ON the Basque Peace Process website, jailed Basque independence leader Arnaldo Otegi has congratulated Sinn Féin on its election successes in the 26 Counties.

THE recent elections in Dublin have shown again the increasing support to Sinn Féin’s policy for a united Ireland, developed during the 1990s Peace Process.

The basis of that Peace Process strategy was to increase public and international support to the republican objectives for a free, united, Irish democratic and socialist republic.

It is clear that, despite all the difficulties, republicans are pursuing their objectives.

The Good Friday Agreement set a democratic path to make possible the unification of the island, recognising the right of Irish citizens to unite if that is the wish of the majority of the people. This gave republicans the opportunity to open a new strategy of force accumulation through which they can achieve the secular objectives of republicanism.

Since then, Sinn Féin has become the first nationalist force in the North and its support is increasing. Now, after the latest elections in the South, Sinn Féin with 14 TDs becomes the leading opposition force to the new Fine Gael/Labour Government, taking into account Fianna Fáil’s lack of credibility among citizens to solve the problems citizens are facing.

Sinn Féin has become a really consolidated force across all Ireland and the only one that can give positive responses to the requirements of citizens, north and south. It has been the commitment of Sinn Féin’s leadership during the last 20 years which has made this happen.

After the last elections, united Ireland is closer than ever.
