Tory minister cancels west Belfast visit to dodge Sinn Féin protests against cuts

Sinn Féin anti-cuts protest

A TORY MINISTER cancelled a visit to west Belfast after Sinn Féin organised protests against Conservative/Lib Dem Government cuts.

Sinn Féin Councillor Janice Austin praised those who protested at the proposed visit by Tory Minister for Welfare Reform Lord Freud to west Belfast on Friday 4th March.

Janice said:

The proposals by Freud and the Tories and Lib Dems to overturn the welfare system in the next three years will have a dire impact on thousands of local people. He was very foolish to think he could swan into west Belfast without Sinn Féin demonstrating against his government's unjust plans for people on welfare.

Lord Freud

It is critical to publicly express anger in the community at the effect of decisions being made by the British Tory-led government which will negatively impact on the lives of people in west Belfast. Nowhere is this more evident than in relation to Tory Party's proposals to introduce wholesale changes to the welfare system without any concern for the consequences on the people we represent.

The welfare cuts being proposed are being driven by London politicians. Although the local Minister for Social Security says he has raised concerns, it looks like there is no one in London listening to him.
