Unexpected death of Eileen McDonnell
Reacting to the news of the tragic and unexpected death of Eileen McDonnell, mother of 1981 hunger striker Joe McDonnell, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams expressed his condolences to the McDonnell family.
``I was deeply saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Eileen McDonnell,'' he said. ``Like many within her community she suffered greatly. She, however, carried her suffering and pain with great dignity, a quality that underpinned everything that she did.
``It is particularly saddening that she passed away on the 20th anniversary of the death of her son Joe. I would like to extend my condolences to Eileen's family. Those of us who were privileged to know her well will mourn her passing deeply.''
Eileen McDonnell was buried on Tuesday, 31 July, in Milltown Cemetery, Belfast.
