Will Labour TDs opposing Programme for Government oppose cuts in the Dáil?

Eoin Ó Broin

LABOUR TD Joanna Tuffy has been challenged by Sinn Féin's Eoin Ó Broin to back up her opposition at the Labour conference to the Fine Gael/Labour coalition by voting in the Dáil against public sector jobs cuts, sale of state assets and increases in university fees.

Eoin Ó Broin said:

The Programme for Government commits the Labour Party to implementing the Fianna Fáil four-year austerity plan, including €6billion of cuts this year and €3billion of cuts next year. It also commits the Labour Party to the EU/IMF bank bail-out which will see billions of taxpayers’ money being poured into toxic banks, including Anglo Irish.

There is no relief in the Programme for families crippled by the Universal Social Charge or the 2010 cuts to social welfare cuts. Nor is there any meaningful investment in or targets for job creation. The only jobs target is a commitment to cut up to 25,000 jobs from the public sector.

The real test for Deputy Tuffy is not whether she opposed the Programme for Government at an internal Labour Party conference but what she does with her vote on the floor of the Dáil.
