Bertie dodges protest
An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern delayed the opening of the Sea Bank House pub in East Wall, Dublin, on Tuesday night in order to avoid a local residents' protest at the withdrawal of a teacher from St Joseph's School and the general lack of educational and recreational facilities for youths in the area.
The withdrawal of a teacher was a negative development given plans to redevelop the area, Sinn Féin councillor Nicky Kehoe said.
The protestors waited diligently from 6.45pm to 9.30pm to greet the Taoiseach, but because of the amount of young children present the picket was called off. As soon as the last of the protestors had trickled away, a buoyant Bertie Ahern arrived. ``Timing is everything,'' a local remarked.
