English queen's visit to Dublin > Gerry Adams responds > Video

A VISIT by the English queen to Dublin is premature when there are still unresolved issues between Ireland 'and our neighbour, our nearest offshore island', Gerry Adams said yesterday.

These issues include the British state's stonewalling of an Oireachtas all-party request for full-co-operation into allegations about the role of the British military and security agencies about the Dublin and Monaghan bombings by the UVF in 1974.

The Sinn Féin President, canvassing in Louth during General Election 2011, was asked about a possible visit by the British monarch.

I don't think the queen should come. There are hugely unresolved matters in terms of the British still claiming jurisdiction even though in terms of the Good Friday Agreement they have moved away from the Government of Ireland Act.

It has been done away with not least because of Sinn Féin's diligence during those negotiations.

I think it's premature and too soon.

When we have right across this island a dispensation based entirely upon the wishes of all of us who live here and no British jurisdiction at all, then that might be a different matter.
