SDLP denies Marks family

Down Council last week refused to back calls for an investigation into the April 1991 killing by undercover RUC members of IRA Volunteer Colum Marks.

Rosemary Rooney, Colum Marks' sister, walked out of the 18 April council meeting in protest.

Sinn Féin had tabled the motion calling for an inquiry, but failed to win enough support from council members, including the SDLP.

In an attempt to justify their rejection of the motion, the SDLP's Eamonn O'Neill said to support the motion would mean every group of families and relatives could bring forward a similar request, inundating the council and the Human Rights Commission.
