Amnesty presses Spain to lift repression of Basque political activity

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL has repeated its call for the Spanish Government to end its repression of Basque prisoners and legitimate political activity and freedom of expression following the announcement by ETA of a permanent ceasefire.

In a statement also pressing ETA to ensure the end of threats and acts of violence, the Spanish Section of Amnesty called for the Spanish Government to:-

Abolish incommunicado detention;

Guarantee all arrested people quick and efficient access to a lawyer of their choice;

Meet in its prisons policy the UN’s Principle 20 which states that prisoners must be able to serve their sentences near their place of belonging, wherever possible and individually requested:

Remove any ambiguity existing in the Political Parties Law that would violate the rights and freedom of thought, expression, association and assembly.
