Sinn Féin protest evictions

Following the eviction of a North Belfast family from their home by the Halifax building society and further eviction threats by the Housing Executive over the past few weeks, Sinn Féin organised a picket outside the Headquarters of the Halifax Building Society on Wednesday, 2 February.

Michael Ferguson, the Sinn Féin councillor who organised the picket, said that he was angered by the way the eviction of Marie Quigley and her family from their Newington home two weeks ago took place.

``It was very disturbing that a family with nowhere to go was ordered to leave their home by the bailiffs,'' he said.

Sinn Féin's North Belfast Assembly member Gerry Kelly is to seek assurances that the scenes witnessed at the eviction will not be repeated. ``I will be letting Halifax know in no uncertain terms that incidents such as this will not go unchallenged,'' he said. ``The community will not be accepting these bully-boy tactics.''
