RUC harass Derry youths

Young people leaving city centre premises in Derry are being harassed by the RUC, says Sinn Féin's Cathal Crumley.

Crumley told An Phoblacht that, ``he has been inundated in recent weeks with complaints about the behaviour of the RUC.

``These complaints range from vicious assaults by riot-clad RUC men to intimidation of individuals leaving bars and clubs''.

The Derry councillor accused the force of ``street-gang like activities'', saying ``the RUC have been travelling around in groups of up to six Land Rovers, inciting and harassing people making their way home.

Councillor Crumley's claims have been backed up by a local youth worker who said, ``quite a few of the young people I work with have reported to me that the attitude of the RUC at the weekend and the past couple of weeks has been aggressive and intimidating''.
