Back issue: Two dozen thieving Brits

Twenty British soldiers pleaded guilty to a series of charges, including breaking and entering and theft, at Newry and Mourne magistrates court on Tuesday.

The men are from the Royal Green Jackets, the Royal Corps of Transport and the First Parachute Regiment. In the first half of last year they carried out a series of petty robberies in Crossmaglen, stealing cigarettes, spirits, wines and beers from the Rangers Gaelic football club and the Mace supermarket.

The punishment these `law and order' keepers received was relatively derisory and amounts to slap-on-the-wrist fines. Three were fined £150 each and other fines ranged between £25 and £100. One soldier got a conditional discharge.
