Quinlivan trial ``fruitless''

In an affidavit submitted on Tuesday, 29 July, to the High Court in Dublin, efforts to extradite Brixton escaper and republican ex-prisoner Nessan Quinlivan were described as ``fruitless''.

Quinlivan has been fighting a District Court order requiring his extradition to Britain since 1995.

Quinlivan's Senior Counsel, Michael Forde, submitted that his client had every reason to expect to be released by July 2000 under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement if extradited. In that context, the exercise was ``fruitless, he said.

Edward Comyn, on behalf of the state, said that the attorney general was seeking time to consider the affidavit and would need time for consultation. Although Quinlivan's case is listed for hearing next Tuesday, it may well be put back until the Autumn.
