UVF abduction attempt in Ardoyne

A group of up to 10 loyalists entered Ardoyne's Brompton Park in the early hours of Saturday 19 June and attempted to abduct a nationalist resident.

At 4.45am, six residents, three women and three men, walked outside their house in Brompton Park after hearing car windows being smashed. They saw a group of loyalists at the top of Brompton Park smashing car windows. One of the loyalists approached the group and jumped onto the garden wall where he shouted: ``You wanted the UVF from the Shankill, now you've got us.''

The loyalist group, brandishing golf clubs, moved right down into the middle of Brompton Park and began throwing bricks and stones before trying to abduct one of the men by attempting to push him into a white Vauxhall Cavalier.

Neighbours ran out to help as one of the girls began screaming. As the neighbours rushed out, the loyalists sped off in two white cars shouting ``Come on you fenian bastards''; one car headed down the Crumlin Road, the other headed into the Shankill. Sinn Féin's Mick Conlon, councillor for the area, has advised residents to be cautious as ``loyalists seem intent on heightening tension in the run up to Drumcree''.
