Poverty in 1999 - Time for Action

Three out of every ten households in the Six Counties live on less then £150 per week, according to statistics released this week by the `Northern Ireland' Anti-Poverty Network.

The figures are included on the group's new poster, released last Wednesday, 19 May, at a conference in Belfast.

The poster `Poverty in 1999 - Time for Action', highlights the extent of poverty experienced by people in the North.

Of the 50,000 children under 18, 37% are affected by poverty.
Two out of every ten unemployed men have been out of work for more than five years.
49,000 women workers are denied their entitlement to contributory benefits such as sick pay and job seekers allowance because they earn under £64 per week.
One in five households rely on social security benefits
Long-term unemployment in disadvantaged rural areas is 7.2% higher than the average.
