We are part and parcel of the European Union... If we are to continue our proud tradition of peace-keeping, we simply have to join Partnership for Peace.

26-County Defence Minister Michael Smith speaking in Athlone last week.

It is very welcome that this represents a drop of one-third in the number of people on the dole since the high point of 300,000 in 1993. But it puts into context how far we still have to go in tackling the legacy of a generation of mass unemployment... the people who are left are increasingly isolated.

The INOU's Bernie McLatchie on the latest unemployment figures for the 26 Counties.

The history of republicanism and the demeanour of republicanism from time immemorial clearly shows that they are not going to bend the knee to the demands of elements of the British military establishment or unionism... I don't believe the IRA are going to jump to any ultimatum or demand issued either by David Trimble or those elements within the British military establishment.

Martin McGuinness, Irish News, Thursday April 8.

Ulster Unionist Council member Alex Kane, speaking in Dundonald about the Agreement. More spin-doctoring or signs of a new departure for unionism? Irish News, Thursday, April 8.

When loyalists feel under threat they resort to sectarianism and I believe David Trimble is responsible for creating this atmosphere.

Sinn Féin Councillor Bobby Lavery after two Catholics were attacked last week in north Belfast.

The Hillsborough Declaration proposes a massive change of the Good Friday Agreement. The Draft Declaration is an attempt to re-write important aspects of the Good Friday Agreement, especially the decommissioning section so that the establishment of the institutions are on unionist terms.

Mitchel McLaughlin after a meeting of senior members of the party last week.

The Drumcree issue is between the government and anti-Agreement forces. The government must take positive action now. Portadown is in an extremely volatile state at present, following the death of Rosemary Nelson. If firm action is not taken soon, then there could be further violence and even loss of life.

Breandán Mac Cionnaith, Irish Times, Friday, April 9.

Just as the Serbs absurdly accused the Albanians of setting fire to their own houses, NATO is now - obscenely - accusing the Serbs of bombing their own cities.

Irish Times report, Friday, April 9.

There are no institutions and no prospects of them. Increasingly, there is a belief that with the unionists sticking to their preconditions, the two governments on that basis are going to move towards a position of parking the Agreement.

Sinn Fein source reacting to reports that the governments are preparing a review of the Good Friday Agreement. Irish News, Tuesday, April 13.
