The reality is that in undertaking these initiatives, and in the context of such an ungenerous response from unionism, Sinn Féin has stretched the Irish republican constituency to the limit in the process. And not without taking damage or suffering defections. The republican constituency can go no further. The fact that the guns are not now in use is of immense significance. The unemployed are now seen as fair game by the Department of Social Welfare. There's no understanding of the nature of long-term unemployment. It's ironic that, as the economy booms, social welfare officials and inspectors are a lot less sympathetic and supportive than they were in the 1980s.

Mike Allen of the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed on the draconian crackdown and harassment of people on social welfare. Ireland On Sunday, 14 February.

I now undertand why you're widely recognised as a total bigot. Please don't send me any more of your racist garbage and do not bother to contact me again.

Reply to DUP Assembly member Gregory Campbell from British Labour MP Martin Saulters after Campbell wrote to him with his theory that `Roman Catholics' cannot be expected to do as well as Protesants because their educational qualifications are lower.

Mr Ahern made it clear that he has not said, as was reported, that Sinn Féin should be barred from the Executive and he also told me that he had made it clear in the interview that there are no preconditions in the Agreement.

Martin McGuinness after talking to Bertie Ahern on Sunday night about his comments on decommissioning and Sinn Feein participation in the Executive.
