Independent inquiry call must be heeded

Over 1000 lawyers, human rights activists and politicians from across the world have supported the demand for an independent inquiry into the murder of human rights lawyer Pat Finucane over ten years ago. Allegations of Crown force collusion have been strengthened following the submission last week of a confidential report to the British and Dublin governments and the UN prepared by British Irish Rights Watch.

The centrality of State collusion in arming Loyalist death squads and collusion in the targeting of nationalists was further underlined by Martin McGuinness in the Assembly on Monday. He held aloft a pin from a South African-made grenade that was part of a consignment that British Agents delivered to various Loyalist groups in the 1980s and was subsequently used in a recent attack on the home of a Nationalist.

Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights, Sir Nigel Rodley, UN Special Rapportuer on Torture, UN Special Rapportuer Dr Data Chumaraswamy, Sir Louis Blom-Cooper, Independent Commissioner for Holding Centres in Northern Ireland, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties along with a host of international lawyers and politicians have also backed the call for an idependent inquiry into the Finucane murder.
