Crown forces accused

West Tyrone Sinn Fein Assembly member Barry McElduff has accused the RUC and British Army of harassing local people along the Donegal border with Castlederg and Aghyaran.

McElduff said, ``there has been a recent increase in RUC checkpoints and British Army patrolling levels particularly at night in the townlands of the border area including Pollyarnon and Carnoughter.''

Local SF councillor Charlie McHugh said, ``the British Army have been breaking down wire fences and vandalising farm equipment, leaving behind plenty of evidence of their activities. This amounts to considerable inconvenience for the rural community, not least those in the Carn border area.''

McElduff is urging people throughout West Tyrone to prepare evidence for the Patten Commission of Policing. The Commission will be holding public hearings in the Strabane and Omagh districts between now and Christmas.
