Ulster Tongues

The Linen Hall Library in Belfast is hosting a series of cultural events in October and November celebrating the linguistic and cultural diversity of the north.

`Ulster Tongues' will be launched in the library on Wednesday, 7 October with Donal O Riagain from the European Bureau of Lesser Used Languages, speaking on minority languages in a European context with particular reference to the Six Counties.

On Wednesday 14 October Dr Philip Robinson from the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum will give a talk on the current status of Ulster Scots.

On Wednesday 21 October Padhraic O'Ciardha from Teilifis na Gaeilge will speak on aspects of the Irish language.

Other events will include a night of music and storytelling, and a discussion of the literary heritage of the last two centuries.

A selection of Ulster Scots and Irish language material from the library's holdings will be exhibited throughout the duration of the programme.
