Ex POW harassed in Waterford

Ex Portlaoise Prisoner Bill Hayes' family was last Saturday harassed by members of the Gardaí and Special Branch.

The five Gardaí and two Branch personnel arrived at the family home in Ferrybank, Co Waterford, looking for Bill. He was not present, but his elderly mother, who was looking after her five grandchildren aged 18 months to ten years, answered the door.

The Gardaí searched the house in its entirety, greatly upsetting Bill's grandmother and the children, who were devastated by the intrusion.

Bill then arrived home and demanded to be told the reason for the intrusion. The Gardaí, who were searching through envelopes, told him that they were searching for guns and queried him and his mother for their views on the Peace Process.

After one-and-a half hours, the Gardaí left empty handed.
