Honour for republican veteran
In a ceremony at Sinn Féin Head Office this week Falls Road republican Owen Coogan made a presentation to veteran republican Joe Cahill in recognition of his lifetime's work for the Republican Movement.
Fittingly, Joe was presented with a brick from the house in Belfast's Cawnpore Street where Tom Williams was shot and captured - along with Joe Cahill and others - at Easter 1942. Tom Williams was hanged and Joe Cahill's death sentence was commuted.
In making the presentation, Owen Coogan praised Joe Cahill's lifetime contribution to republicanism: ``From those days in the 1940s, through every decade since and right up to his work during the current peace process, Joe has been an inspiration to republicans everywhere. Never afraid of change or of tough decisions, he has always given exemplary leadership.''
