SF win chair of Buncrana

Councillor Jim Ferry became the first ever Sinn Fein Chairman of Buncrana Council after a narrow 5-4 vote last Tuesday 16 June. Ferry was elected with support from Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Independent Fianna Fail councillors. After his victory Jim Ferry said support coming from across the parties put the council in a position to ``move forward in a spirit comradeship for the good of Buncrana''.

Calling the victory an endorsement of Sinn Fein's significant role in the peace process and the Good Friday document, councillor Ferry pledged to promote open government, secure Urban Renewal status for Buncrana, complete the Fullerton Dam project initiated by friend and colleague, the late Eddie Fullerton who was shot dead by loyalists, promote tourism and keep Buncrana free of drugs.

Fianna Fail councillor Rena Donaghy said Mr Ferry's election was richly deserved and that it was important to acknowledge the constructive and positive role of Sinn Fein and the ``magnificent leadership'' of Sinn Fein who had ``a longer and harder road to travel''.
