Key union backs Charter
AN IMPORTANT American trade union has expressed its support for peace and justice in Ireland.
UNITE, The Union of Needletrades Industrial and Textile Employees, adopted the resolution in favour of `Charter for Change' at its February General Executive Board meeting. The vote is considered significant by the human rights activists as the union has no particular concentration of Irish or Irish-American workers.
UNITE is best known as.the union of Norma Rae, the Southern textile worker made famous by Sally Fields in the Hollywood movie.
It has been in the vanguard of the fight for immigrant rights and foreign trade policies with strong labour rights and environmental protections and it led most US campaigns against sweatshops, be they in the US or in Latin America.
Missouri-based union leader Paul Winslow, who introduced the resolution, welcomed the move as a ``big step toward bringing the full labour and human rights community behind the Charter for Change, a vision for equality, justice and peace in Ireland.''
