Youth wings work together on sexual health strategy

The parties’ youth wings at the Apprentice Boys’ Hall in Derry City

ACTIVISTS from Ógra Shinn Féin, the SDLP, Green Party, Alliance Party, the Ulster Unionist Party and the DUP are working together on a sexual health policy for young people.
The group attended a weekend residential in St Columb’s Park House in Derry in September where they had the input from and discussions with a range of sexual health educators and medical staff working with young people.
The weekend included visits further outside people’s comfort zones with visits to the Apprentice Boys hall in the city and the Free Derry Museum in the Bogside.
Ógra National Organiser Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire was well pleased with co-operative enterprise shown across the range of political opinion on this crucial health issue.
“Young people from parties as diverse as the DUP and Sinn Féin discussing issues such as sexual health in the North would have been seen as unimaginable even as recently as five years ago, not to mind 20 years ago.
“I think it’s extremely positive. It’s a sign of young people showing leadership. To see young people working together on concrete issues such as these and coming up with progressive solutions that are workable is really encouraging.”
He added:
“We hope that, having agreed on this strategy, we will now able to campaign and all continue to work together on this crucial issue.”
