Sportsview: Dungiven's talent wins through

A big day out for the clubs and provinces last week. The Railway Cup seems to be sinking further and further into hurling oblivion, with only a few hundred souls turning out to witness Munster beat Leinster on Sunday in Ballinasloe to claim their third successive title. Munster had previously beaten Connacht on Saturday while Leinster beat Ulster in an entertaining game.

Another big weekend for club football and hurling. Dublin's Erin's Isle scraped by Edenderry's Offaly at Parnell Park in the Leister Football quarterfinals, with Clane of Kildare beating Moate of Westmeath.

In the Ulster Senior Football Final Dungiven from Derry beat Tyrone's Errigal Ciaran by three points before 10,000 people in Clones. Dungiven's inter-county players played their part in a comfortable well-balanced performance, enough for the Oak Leaf men to progress to the All-Ireland semi-finals. Last year's runners-up Knockmore from Mayo joined earlier casualties and last year's winners Crossmaglen after being beaten by Galway's Corrifin in Tuam.

Wins for Clarecastle in the Clare Senior hurling decider and a surprise victory for Ballygunner of Waterford over Limerick's Sarsfields in the Munster Club Hurling replay. In Cork Beara bridged a 30-year gap to capture the Cork Senior football title from Castlehaven.

No joy at the `Reichstag'!

Well, at Ibrox the first Old Firm derby of the season finished 1-0 for Rangers. King hun himself Richard Gough scored. The English clown Gascoigne was the star for the Huns. On the Celtic side there was no evidence of the team of the past two months. The only consolation for the Bhoys was the defence, who managed to keep Negri from scoring in the league for the first time this season, with Reiper and Stubbs (before being taken off) giving credible performances. Frenchman Stephane Mahe's sending off eight minutes from time provided another black spot for the Celts. Nothing more to say bar there are still three Old Firm games left and Celtic will win all three (fingers crossed).

Hearts still remain top of the premiership after a 2-0 win and their 100th derby win in all over neighbours Hibernian in Edinburgh.

In the League of Ireland Bohs played out a dull 0-0 draw against UCD, who deserved their point, on Friday night. After eleven games the Bohs have only lost one game. They have however seven draws, and will have to start winning again if they are to be considered serious contenders for the championship. St Pat's remain in control after beating Kilkenny City 2-0. Reigning champions Derry City recorded their third successive victory, beating Drogheda United and knocking in four in the process. The northwest derby involving Sligo Rovers and Finn Harps finished 2-2 after Jonathan Speak saved Finn Harps with a late goal in the 88th minute. Nice to see the boys from Cork do well and beat Shamrock Rovers 3-1 in their own back yard (oops, they haven't got one!).

And room for just a quick word on Ireland's match against Belgium on Saturday. Although wishing them all the best they have an uphill battle and losing Dinny Irwin doesn't help. I don't think they'll make it and I don't think are good enough anyway.
