Derry City meeting Tuesday focuses on PSNI's 'Operation Exposure'
SINN FÉIN Councillor Patricia Logue is convening a meeting in Derry City tomorrow (Tuesday 21st) to discuss views from various organisations about the PSNI’s ‘Operation Exposure’.
The meeting will include representatives from the Children’s Commission, Human Rights Commission, Derry DPP, and PSNI.
‘Operation Exposure’ involves photos of (mainly young) people being printed in newspapers and the public asked to identify them with a view to prosecution
Tuesday’s meeting was arranged prior to the release of a report by the Policing Board’s Human Rights Advisor that the PSNI should not release images or details of anyone under 18 unless it is absolutely necessary in terms of protecting the general public or the young person from serious injury and only after all other methods have been tried and failed.
Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue said:
Since October 2009, I have been in contact with the Children’s Commission and the Human Rights Commission to raise my concerns about the publication of photographs in the local press. My party colleague, Martina Anderson MLA, has raised the issue at Policing Board level.
I intend to discuss with the various organisations their response to the latest advice from the Human Rights Advisor and what the PSNI will be doing to insure they keep within the human rights framework.
This meeting will also provide an opportunity to discuss issues around interface violence and late-night anti-community behaviour that is causing problems in many areas across Derry, particularly at the weekends.
