Sinn Féin launch referendum campaign to remove 8th amendment

“I want my daughter and her friends to be able to live in Ireland where they can make decisions about their own healthcare with the support of their doctors. I want doctors to be able to act in the best interest of their patients in all cases without fear of criminal sanction.” - Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin have today launched their campaign calling for a yes vote in the upcoming referendum to remove the 8th amendment. Sinn Féin public representatives were joined by party members and members of the media in the Temple Bar Art Gallery for the launch, where party Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty described the tone of the campaign Sinn Féin will be running.

“We are running a campaign that focuses on the need for care, compassion and trust.

"We understand that you cannot have a compassionate, caring approach to those in crisis pregnancy situations while the 8th Amendment remains.” the Donegal TD told the crowd.

Recent polls show that the vote yes campaign has a distinct lead ahead of the opposition, whose support has been stagnant for the past number of months.

Giving the keynote address was Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald, who alongside Pearse Doherty, was joined by Megan Fearon MLA, John Finucane, Louise O’Reilly TD and Jonathan O’Brien TD. The Dublin Central TD stressed the importance of letting care, compassion and trust prevail, as well as highlighting the importance of a calm, rational debate as polling day nears.

Speaking to An Phoblacht at the event, McDonald says she urges people to vote yes on May 25th, and hopes to see an Ireland that no longer punishes tragedy, an Ireland that doesn’t turn its back on women and girls.

“I want my daughter and her friends to be able to live in Ireland where they can make decisions about their own healthcare with the support of their doctors.  I want doctors to be able to act in the best interest of their patients in all cases without fear of criminal sanction.”
