Westminster’s Brexit policy ‘all over the place’

THERESA MAY’S Tory Government policy on its withdrawal from the EU is without direction or vision, Sinn Féin Brexit spokesperson John O’Dowd MLA has said.

“The British Government’s policy approach to Brexit is bouncing up and down like the British pound and it would be hilarious if it were not so serious,” the Upper Bann Assembly member said.

It is no laughing matter for families, workers and businesses facing the consequences of Brexit, John O’Dowd (pictured) emphasised.

“There is only one thing worse than a bad policy and that is a bad policy being badly implemented.

“The British Government were steadfast in their opposition to Westminster having no role on voting on the terms of Brexit – now the British Government are going to allow Westminster to have a vote on Brexit.

“The British Government were going to stop paying into the EU budget once they left the EU – now well-informed sources say this is not the case and they will continue to pay into the EU budget to have access to the Single Market.”

The Sinn Féin MLA said that Westminster’s “bad policy being badly implemented” – and supported by the DUP – is damaging the economy and people’s lives on both sides of the Border.

“Uncertainty is thwarting investment and jobs. Brexit is already affecting household budgets as anyone who has recently ordered home heating oil will realise.”

He said that voters in the North had made their position clear in the Brexit referendum, and that was “Remain”:

“If England and Wales want to leave the EU, they should get on with it and leave the rest of us with some semblance of stability.”
