Remembering the courage of ‘Red Mick’ Devine and showing solidarity with Palestinian hunger striker
DOZENS of Sinn Féin activists took part in a white-line picket on Saturday 20 August to mark the 35th anniversary of H-Block martyr Michael ‘Red Mick’ Devine, the last of the ten republican Hunger Strikers to die in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh in 1981.
The Sinn Féin activists – including West Belfast MP Paul Maskey, Assembly members Fra McCann and Pat Sheehan along with Belfast City Councillors Séanna Walsh, Janice Austin and Ciarán Beattie – were also determined to highlight the case of Palestinian prisoner Bilal Kayed, who is intensive care after more than 68 days of a hunger strike protest against the Zionist regime interning him under their repressive Administrative Detention legislation.
When the white-line picket (which was under PSNI surveillance for its duration) came to a close, the activists gathered as West Belfast MLA Fra McCann outlined his recent visit to Palestine where he was part of an international parliamentary delegation that met the Palestinian activist, relatives and campaigners.
