SINN FÉIN'S Martin McGuinness was reappointed as deputy First Minister as the North's Assembly met today for the first time following last week's elections.

The Foyle MLA was nominated for the position by former junior minister and West Belfast MLA Jennifer McCann.

Proposing Martin McGuinness, she said:

“Martin McGuinness demonstrated exemplary leadership as deputy First Minister and it is with great pleasure that I nominate for that position once again.

“Through his leadership, Martin has taken the Peace Process and political process forward, working steadfastly for everyone in the community.”

A number of other key positions were also allocated at today's sitting of the Assembly.

South Down MLA Caitríona Ruane was appointed as Principal Deputy Speaker and Carál Ní Chuilín was selected as the Chief Whip and Group Leader of the Sinn Féin Assembly team.

It was the first Assembly for newly-elected Sinn Féin MLAs Caoimhe Archibald, Linda Dillon, Catherine Seeley and Declan Kearney.
