Cuban leadership thanks Sinn Féin for its 'support for the Cuban cause'

Cuban Ambassador Dr Hermes Herrera Hernández at the Ard Fheis

THE CUBAN Ambassador to Ireland, Dr Hermes Herrera Hernández, has brought solidarity greetings to the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis in Dublin from the people and Government in Cuba.

Dr Hernández said the Communist Party's Central Committee expressed “gratitude to Sinn Féin for its support to the Cuban cause in its struggle against the blockade and for its deep feelings of solidarity towards our country and its people”.

Speaking of the easing of tensions between Cuba and the USA, the Cuban leadership said:

“The process for the reestablishment of relations between Cuba and the United Sates is clear evidence that the ideas that we defend are so just that the mightiest power in the world has had to recognise the failure of its hostile policy against our country.”

The Communist Party said it would be naïve to believe the US had ceased its aim of destroying the revolution and said Cuba is ready to accept the challenge:

“We will continue demanding the end of the criminal blockade against Cuba, the return of the territory illegally occupied by the Guantanamo Navy Base, and the end of the subversive actions against our country.”

Commenting on relations between Sinn Féin and the Cuban leadership, the Central Committee said:

“It is a pleasure for us to express our acknowledgement to the Sinn Féin members and their leadership for the close bonds of friendship and solidarity that we have forged in the last years. The visit of your leader Gerry Adams last year was undoubtedly a cornerstone in this road.”
