The Irish Volunteer - Óglach na hÉireann, Volume 2 - Number 68

Volunteer parades were held all over the country on St. Patrick’s Day, the largest in Dublin, where the Dublin Brigade was inspected by Eoin Mac Néill and P.H, Pearse in College Green.

The paper reports a serious incident in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, when the Irish Volunteers’ premises were attacked by a crowd associated with the British Army in the town. These would have included ‘separation women’, who received payment while their husbands were serving with the British Army. Stones and bottles were fired through the windows and when the crowd threatened to invade the building Volunteers fired shots over their heads. The RIC then entered the premises and started searching for arms, bringing the mob with them. Volunteers were attacked by both RIC men and some of the hostile crowd. Revolvers were fired and an RIC sergeant injured.
