1916 Banksy-style graffiti appears on Moore Street

AN EYE-CATCHING piece of graffiti in the style of the world-renowned Banksy has appeared on Moore Street at the site of the last HQ of the 1916 Rising rebels before their surrender to the overwhelming forces of the British Empire.

The image is a reworking of the famous scene of Pádraig Pearse surrendering to the British Army commander just yards away at the top of Moore Street with the junction at Parnell Street.

In this reimagining of the episode, Pearse is facing not the destruction threatened by the guns and artillery of the British but the sledge hammers and wrecking balls of the property developers who want to all but destroy this irreplaceable piece of history and national monument with a commercial retail shopping centre.

And the other difference is that, this time, the rebels are determined not to surrender.
