The British Army is reported demanding hay from farmers in County Meath at below market prices to supply war needs. This is being protested by the Meath Farmers Association. The British government has announced an increase in income tax to pay for the war and the margin of exempt incomes has been lowered to £130.
Terence Mac Swiney continues his diary of the Volunteer training camp at Coosan, Athlone. It moved to another location after the landlord, Lord Ashtown, threatened the tenant who had allowed the Volunteers to use his land.
‘PHP’ – presumably PH Pearse – describes in detail Dublin Brigade manoeuvres around Stepaside in the Dublin mountains held on 19 September. Pearse himself, Thomas Mac Donagh and Éamonn Ceannt were involved.
