The Irish Volunteer - Óglach na hÉireann Volume 2 - Number 31

• Advert in 'The Irish Volunteer', 10th July 1915

The paper warns of plans by the British Government for compulsory registration of men of military age, which would be a precursor to Conscription – compulsory military service in the British Army. A large parade of Volunteers was held in Derry’s Bogside, including an armed unit, to demonstrate opposition to Conscription. An article entitled ‘Why Artillery would be Ineffective in Ireland’ argues that for the type of guerrilla warfare that would develop in the Irish countryside, England’s big guns would be of little use. Ironically artillery was to be the decisive factor in Dublin at Easter 1916 but it would indeed have been useless against the IRA flying columns of the Black and Tan war and was never used then.
