An tÓglach – The Irish Volunteer, 1st May 1915
The new British Lord Lieutenant and Governor General of Ireland was Lord Wimbourne and this issue reports that 28 members of Dublin Corporation voted an address of welcome to him. The paper derides this minority of city councillors who stated that Lord Wimbourne would be popular in Ireland because he liked horse-racing. Mac Néill comments:
“The horsy community as a class in Ireland have about as much nationality as their favourite animals have… The horsy people say that they keep up a great Irish industry. As a matter of fact, the hens and ducks, that are left to do their own cackling and quacking, bring five times as much wealth into Ireland.”
