Cross-party call for public to support Gaza Toy Drive
TDs and Senators from Sinn Féin, the Labour Party and Fianna Fáil joined members of the Gaza Toy Drive campaign outside Leinster House on Thursday in a final public appeal for support to ensure thousands of toys collected for the children of Gaza can be delivered.
Speaking to An Phoblacht at the publicity event on Dawson Street, Sinn Féin's International Affairs spokesperson Seán Crowe TD said:
"The Toys for Gaza group have spent weeks collecting new and usable toys for children in Gaza, where high unemployment, blockade by land, sea and air, and the constant threat of attack makes it impossible for families to provide basic items for their children's happiness."
The Dublin South West TD said the hugely generous response from the Irish public following the recent Israeli onslaught means that seven forty-foot cargo-containers with medical supplies, toys, clothes, educational items, books, bikes, prams, and all manner of baby-care items are now in storage in Dublin waiting to be shipped abroad to Gaza.
“In order to ship and deliver these supplies, and to avoid paying high storage fees, the Toys for Gaza group need to raise €30,000 urgently", he said.
Speaking to An Phoblacht earlier this month, Gaza Toy Drive's Eileen Carr said she is confident the donations will make it into Gaza via Egypt, but that public support to cover the costs of shipping is needed urgently.
