Motion for statue to 1916 heroes on O'Connell Street passed
DUBLIN City Council's Central Area Committee has voted in favour of a proposal by Sinn Féin Councillor Janice Boylan to erect a statue on O’Connell Street to honour the women and men of the 1916 Easter Rising.
The North Inner City councillor said:
"Although the history around the GPO and our capital city is widely known there is no monument or piece of art erected to honour the memory of these men and women."
Statues on O'Connell Street include those commemorating nationalist leaders Daniel O'Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell, William Smith O'Brien and John Gray; trade unionist Jim Larkin and temperance movement leader Father Mathew.
The proposal has now been forwarded to Dublin City Council's Commemorations Committee where Councillor Boylan says she is hopeful the proposal will be given the support needed.
