Video – Irish solidarity with Greek people ahead of crunch EU talks
A SOLIDARITY rally with Greece was held outside Leinster House on Wednesday as crunch talks between the country's SYRIZA-led Government and eurozone finance ministers got underway in Brussels.
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD told An Phoblacht at the event:
"Enda Kenny and Michael Noonan are acting as representatives of the EU elite in Ireland. They are not acting as representatives of the Irish people. It is incomprehensible that our government would rule out any deal on Ireland’s debt if the Greeks are successful in obtaining one for their own people."
Finance Minister Michael Noonan earlier complained of rampant tax evasion in Greece and said it was a fallacy to blame its creditors for its plight.
Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy hit out at the remarks describing them as a clear example of the contemptuous attitude which the Minister holds towards those who have suffered most at the hands of the financial crash:
"Rather than seizing the opportunity and momentum rising across Europe Minister Noonan has instead, true to form, meekly toed the EU establishment line when he stated that Ireland would not support a debt-write down for Greece. He once again aligned himself with the most conservative elements within Europe and against the interests of the Irish people."
