Video – Pearse Doherty confronts Finance Minister on water charges ‘scaremongering’
IN the resumed Finance Bill Dáil debate on Wednesday morning, Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD got stuck in to Finance Minister Michael Noonan, telling him that threats to increase taxes and cut Child Benefit are “complete and utter scaremongering”.
The Sinn Féin TD went on to say it is “a sign of desperation from a desperate government that is simply out of touch with the people” before outlining alternatives to water charges.
The Donegal South-West TD also described as an “absolute disgrace” that a handful of multi-millionaires would benefit very generously from a new measure put forward by the Government in Budget 2015 that would allow them to reduce their tax liabilities by 30%.
Challenging the Finance Minister on the Special Assignee Relief Programme (SARP), Pearse Doherty said:
“You do this at the same time you tell families that simply do not have money left at the end of the week that they have to ‘tighten their belts’ and pay up for the sins of others through water charges, property charges, prescription charges and other charges.”
